Our story

He's not naughty. He just needs to move.

I’m Tracy, and this is my son Joshua. Joshua is autistic. He’s funny, loving and full of energy, and his body runs at an 11 from the moment he wakes up. Glow Trail started on our living-room floor, because I needed somewhere for all that energy to go.

Before

Our sofa was a trampoline

If you're reading this, I think you already know. The sofa was a trampoline. The stairs were a climbing frame. The arm of the chair was a diving board. I said "get down" a hundred times a day, and I hated hearing myself say it.

Going out wasn't much easier. Soft play cost a fortune, he'd be overwhelmed within twenty minutes, and there were always the looks. So, more and more, we stayed home. And home became the gym.

We tried everything. We even bought a trampoline for the garden. He still jumped off the sofa, because he wanted to be in the living room, near us. I was on guard all day, every day, and most evenings my tea went cold.

The moment

Then we stopped fighting it

The thing that changed everything wasn't a product. It was a sentence another parent said to me: stop fighting the movement and give it somewhere safe to go.

He didn't need to stop jumping. He needed a place where jumping was a yes. So I started looking for something we could put right there on the living-room floor, where the sofa-jumping actually happens. Something he'd choose over the sofa.

That's why we made Glow Trail: liquid-gel stepping stones that light up as little feet land on them. The first night, we turned the big light off and laid out a little trail on the rug. Joshua stepped on the first one, it lit up and the colours swirled under his feet, and he just looked at me with the biggest grin. Then he was off, hopping from one to the next, round and round, again and again.

They have been using them constantly to play the floor is lava and pretend quicksand games across the carpet. The liquid interior swirls smoothly whenever the children step down.

These are really cute and they also look good without being on! They look like they're decently made for all the use they'll get!

Why Glow Trail

So every family has a place for the big energy

The stones didn't change who he is, and I'd never want them to. What they changed was the shape of our days. Joshua has a "yes" place now. A trail he can rebuild every morning, hop across after school and stomp on as hard as he likes. Some days it's lava, some days it's a colour hunt.

But finding anything like this wasn't easy. A lot of what's out there is flimsy, clinical or sold like hospital equipment. I wanted pieces tough enough for real kids, soft enough on the eyes for sensory kids, and lovely enough to live in a family living room.

So we started Glow Trail. We're a small family business, not a big company. Every set is the trail I wish I'd found sooner. If you're in the thick of it right now, please hear this: you're not doing it wrong. They're not doing it wrong either. They just need to move.
